Makoi Fire Destroys Family Home
‘My dad gave the house to me. I don’t know how to call my father and tell him that the house he built was destroyed’
Ahouse containing two flats was destroyed in a fire at Makoi on Tuesday night.
Owner, Atrun Nisha, was speechless when she got out of her vehicle yesterday and saw the house she was brought up in was destroyed by the fire.
The incident occurred at Matanisiga Street after 6pm. The 60-year-old lived in Nadi after she remarried two years ago and left the house for her daughter. “I could not hold back my tears when I was called and told that the house I was raised in was destroyed,” Ms Nisha said.
“I have a lot of memories here. As the eldest in the family my dad gave the house to me.
“I don’t know how to call my father and tell him that the house he built was destroyed in the fire.”
Ms Nisha said her daughter was on her way to get an electrician when the house caught fire.
“My daughter told me that she could smell something burning so she switched off the main power and drove with two of her children to get an electrician,” she said.
“I am happy that no one was injured and that she took her children with her.
“My daughter and her family lived in the front flat that had three bedrooms and the flat at the back which had two bedrooms was for rent.
“I hope that people will help me rebuild my house,” she said.
Her neighbour, Litia
Mafili Kataitini, said: “At around 6.25pm we saw that smoke was coming out of the house and we called the National Fire Authority.
“We tried to break the lock to find out if there was anyone inside, but luckily no one was.
“This is the first time there is a fire in our street and it is a wakeup call for us.”
Questions sent to the National Fire Authority remained unanswered by the time this edition went to press.
