Thank you, Nemani
Fred Taylor, Nasinu
I wish to applaud Nemani Delaibatiki of the Fiji Sun for his timely advice this week to all traders and consumers on what our 2020-2021 National Budget has in store for all Fijians.
After the passing of the budget in Parliament, consumers are anxious to know the value of their dollar on items whose duty has been dropped or reduced. Their expectation is price reduction passed on to them. You don’t have to be an economist to understand this.
Having said this, consumers will still be subjected to unscrupulous traders, which has always been the case in the past.
But hopefully some improvement will now come from the amendment to the Fijian Consumer and Competition Commission (FCCC), which empowers them to ensure that the benefit of tax changes is passed on to consumers.
And also checking on businesses and traders whether they are charging the right prices on the prescribed items and bring to light those who are not and hold them accountable.
I agree with Mr Delaibatiki’s view of this budget as being a friendly one. I hope it stays that way.
