His inspiration came from a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun last December. It was enough for local designer Hupfeld Hoerder to take out three of the four awards at the Fiji Fashion Week 2016. The headline in no way signifies his success – but is the name of his new range of bridal wear that won him the awards and praises at the Fiji Fashion Week 2016 event. “It’s is not about winning, it’s all about my passion for the work I do.” Inspired by the cherry blossoms of Japan, the culture and how women put together their dress with their own hands, Hoerder came up with his ‘2nd Time Around’ theme. “It was my first trip ever to Japan and it was for an exchange called Jenesys Cultural Program. Hoerder’s ‘2nd Time Around’ line was done specifically for women who were lucky enough to say “I do” a second time. “It could also be for women who wanted to renew their vows, hence the pastel colours were designed to move away from the traditional white bridal gowns. “My underlying theme was based on the basic classical designs of the 1950s-1970s era, paying tribute to the evolution of fashion and the liberation of women. Hoerder won the Textile Design Award, Special Achievement and the Established Design Award.

The award adds to the many others that Hoerder has managed to walk away with every year, but he always pays tribute to the hard work by his staff and supporters behind the scenes. “I pay tribute to my parents and my siblings and also my supporters, but mostly give the glory back to God for he gave me this talent.” Hoerder said he thought a tribute was also due to Ellen Whippy and her fantastic volunteers for another well organized Fiji Fashion Week event this year.” He said he believes the fashion industry in Fiji had much potential because of the abundance of talent and designers who come out every year. “Maybe if the stakeholders with Government can work towards formal education in schools and tertiary level – it would be great. “There needs to be more awareness from the grass-root level, fashion taught at school level and nurtured till tertiary level.”
