FSC’s plan ‘successful’
THE Fiji Sugar Corporation’s strategic plan has been successful as shown in their response to Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.
Sugar Ministry permanent secretary Yogesh Karan said their prompt response helped prepare cane farms for harvesting despite the cyclone’s impact.
He described the implementation as a success as teams worked with government ministries to ensure that the harvesting season remained on course.
“Cane farms were affected and we worked with the Ministry of Waterways to clear the drains in cane farms which were filled with silt,” he said.
“We also set aside a budget to clear all debris from farms and prepare for the harvesting season.
“As we know that the volume of debris in Rakiraki was unbelievable so the FSC worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Waterways to fix this.”
Mr Karan said the positive response reflected the success of the strategic plan and FSC recorded the lowest 1.3 million tonnes of cane harvested in Fiji’s sugar history in 2016.
