Dès ses premiers numéros, artpress a défendu les réalisations d’Anna Halprin, Robert Wilson ou Philip Glass, dont les spectacles étaient nés de rencontres entre les arts plastiques, le théâtre, la danse et la musique. L’esprit qui les animait – Jacqueline Caux le rappelle dans ces pages – remontait aux expériences du Bauhaus, prolongées aux États-Unis par les artistes venus d’Allemagne qui avaient rejoint le Black Mountain College. C’est dans cette généalogie que s’inscrivent les spectacles de New Settings, auxquels il était donc tout naturel de consacrer ce cahier spécial. Nous présentons ici les cinq spectacles de l’édition 2014, ainsi qu’un bilan et une mise en perspective des trois années passées. Ces collaborations entre les arts sont rendues possibles par la Fondation d’entreprise Hermès et le Théâtre de la Cité internationale, unis dans une forme originale de mécénat. L’attirance des artistes pour la scène est aujourd’hui croissante, soit qu’ils transforment l’exposition en un plateau de théâtre ou de cinéma, soit qu’ils se fassent eux-mêmes metteurs en scène, auteurs de spectacles et d’opéras. Ancrés dans l’histoire, ces spectacles sont aussi la manifestation de la création la plus contemporaine.

Ever since its earliest issues, artpress has championed artists like Anna Halprin, Robert Wilson and Philip Glass, whose shows brought together visual arts, theater, dance and music. They were guided by a spirit that, as Jacqueline Caux recalls here, went back to the experiments of the Bauhaus, which themselves were continued at Black Mountain College in the U.S., notably by artists who had emigrated from Germany. This is the background to the New Settings program of shows, making it a natural subject for a special pull-out. Here we present five of the events in the coming season, as well as an overview of the three previous editions. These collaborations between the arts have been enabled by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès and the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris, united in an original form of arts patronage. Without a doubt, the stage has a real pull for today’s artists: some turn their exhibitions into theater or movie sets, others have started directing themselves, yet others have written plays or operas. The shows presented by New Settings in 2014 are both eminently contemporary and grounded in a rich history.
