Recent ex­hi­bi­tions in Eu­rope and the Uni­ted States have re­vea­led the gro­wing im­por­tance of the abs­tract he­ri­tage in young Ame­ri­can pain­ting and pho­to­gra­phy, whe­ther in New York or Los An­geles. The two texts that fol­low sketch out the de­fi­ning cha­rac­te­ris­tics of this new abs­trac­tion which of­ten pro­ceeds by stealth and look at the way in which the ar­tists con­cer­ned draw on and adapt thei va­rious sources.
