Wolf­gang Tillmans Pic­tures for To­day

At the age of 47, Wolf­gang Tillmans has just be­come one of the youn­gest win­ners of the Has­sel­blad Prize, along­side Se­bas­tião Sal­ga­do, Cin­dy Sher­man and Wa­lid Raad. Awar­ded an­nual­ly for li­fe­time achie­ve­ment in pho­to­gra­phy, it is ce­le­bra­ted by an exhibition at the Has­sel­blad Cen­ter (Gö­te­borg, Swe­den, De­cem­ber 1, 2015—Fe­brua­ry 14, 2016) and by a book (pu­bli­shed by Wal­ther Kö­nig). In ma­king the award, the Has­sel­blad Foun­da­tion spoke of Tillmans’ abi­li­ty to take pho­to­gra­phy in new di­rec­tions, as well as of the cri­ti­cal di­men­sion in his art and his contri­bu­tion to the re­ne­wal of exhibition forms. Here, the ar­tist talks about his recent work and his idea of crea­ting “pic­tures for to­day.”
