Since the ear­ly 1970s Ma­ry Heil­mann (b. San Fran­cis­co, 1940) has been ma­king pain­tings that elude the usual ca­te­go­ries es­ta­bli­shed for abs­tract work. An im­por­tant in­fluence on youn­ger ar­tists, her star rose shar­ply in the U.S. af­ter her 2007–8 tou­ring re­tros­pec­tive,

Ear­lier this year, at Lon­don’s Whi­te­cha­pel Gal­le­ry (en­ded Au­gust 21, 2016) gave art lo­vers on this side of the pond the chance to take a clo­ser look at her sin­gu­lar art.
