The Royal Exchange film
The Royal Exchange, directed by Bordeaux writer Marc Dugain and based on the novel by Chantal Thomas, retraces the story set in 1721, when Philippe d’orléans, the regent of France, decided to seal a peace treaty with Spain by arranging the marriage of two children. Louis XV, age 11, was to wed Maria Anna Victoria, the Spanish Infanta, age 4. To sweeten the deal, he offered his own 12-year-old daughter to the 14-year-old Prince of Asturias. The exchange was to take place on a small island – the Ile des Faisans – in the Bidasoa river between the two countries. Nothing proceeded as planned!
