A Nature Break on l’île Nouvelle

Bordeaux Wine Trip - - Bordeaux Wine Routes Favourites -

For three centuries, l’île Nouvelle (‘the new island’) was dyked and cultivated, initially for vine growth and later for maize production. In the 1920s there were as many as 150 inhabitants; numerous buildings (a school, a warehouse, etc.) bear witness to those times. The regional authorities have since turned the ‘island’ into a 270-hectare nature reserve which contains a bird sanctuary (herons, crests, spoonbills, swans, etc.). 15 minute boat crossing from Blaye. www.tourisme-blaye.com
