Kering Puts Women in Spotlight in Cannes

Hosted by Va­ri­ety, the 2016 Women in Mo­tion Talks will fea­ture a raft of other speak­ers, in­clud­ing Juli­ette Binoche from We Do It To­gether (WDIT), a pro­duc­tion com­pany for the em­pow­er­ment of women, Women in Mo­tion awards re­cip­i­ents Geena Davis and Susan Saran­don, Salma Hayek Pin­ault, Chloe Se­vi­gny and agent Rena Ron­son. The Kering in Mo­tion pro­gram also fea­tures a se­ries of talks, run­ning through the Fes­ti­val with fe­male film­mak­ers. The line-up will be an­nounced shortly. Both re­cip­i­ents have been se­lected for their con­tri­bu­tion to the in­dus­try and to women’s causes, two of the themes that Kering sup­ports and writes about in its online pub­li­ca­tion pub­lished on www.kering. com, and in its busi­ness phi­los­o­phy. Davis is the founder and chair of the non-profit or­gan­i­sa­tion, the Geena Davis In­sti­tute on Gen­der in Me­dia, which has pi­o­neered and led re­search into the im­bal­ance of fe­male char­ac­ters on-screen and be­hind-the-cam­era. In ad­di­tion, Davis was ap­pointed Spe­cial En­voy for Women and Girls in ICT by the UN’S In­ter­na­tional Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion Union (ITU). She is also an of­fi­cial part­ner of UN Women, which pro­motes gen­der equal­ity and the em­pow­er­ment of women world­wide. Davis is also the Chair of the Cal­i­for­nia Com­mis­sion on the Status of Women. In 2015, Davis launched the Ben­tonville Film Fes­ti­val (BFF) to sup­port women and diver­sity in the en­ter­tain­ment in­dus­try. She serves as its Co-founder and Chair. Ac­tivist Susan Saran­don, mean­while, is com­mit­ted to hu­man rights, and sup­ports var­i­ous non-profit and hu­man rights or­ga­ni­za­tions world­wide. The ac­tresses co-stared in the road movie which screened at the Fes­ti­val in 1991. Last year, the Women in Mo­tion Awards were given to pro­ducer Me­gan El­li­son and Jane Fonda. The ob­jec­tive of the Women in Mo­tion pro­gram is to stim­u­late dis­cus­sion and en­cour­age thought on the place of women in the film in­dus­try, both on and off screen. A global ap­parel group, Kering’s lux­ury, sport and lifestyle brands, in­clude Gucci, Bot­tega Veneta, Saint-lau­rent, Alexan­der Mc­queen, Ba­len­ci­aga, Bri­oni, Christo­pher Kane, MCQ, Stella Mccart­ney, To­mas Maier and Boucheron. Op­er­at­ing in more than 120 coun­tries, the group gen­er­ated rev­enues of more than €11.5b in 2015. LF
