The 12th cen­tury bell tower was un­able to sup­port the bells and house the Great Bell so It be­came nec­es­sary to build a bell tower sep­a­rate from the cathe­dral, which was done in 1440. It was only in 1863 that a monumental statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine was raised on top. At the top of some 231 steps and from a height of 50 me­tres, this is un­doubt­edly the finest panoramic view­ing plat­form in the city!
