For the first time in France a major retrospective is being devoted to El Greco. Domenikos Theotokopoulos, called El Greco, was born in Crete in 1541. His first apprenticeship was undertaken in the pure Byzantine tradition before studying in Venice and then Rome. His art would flourish in Spain and he would be regarded as the last great master of the Renaissance and the first of the Golden Age.

Cette rétrospective est la première grande exposition jamais consacrée en France au Greco. Domenikos Theotokopoulos, dit El Greco, est né en Crète en 1541. Il fait son premier apprentissage dans la tradition byzantine avant de parfaire sa formation à Venise puis à Rome, mais c’est en Espagne que son art s’épanouit. Il est aujourd’hui considéré comme le dernier grand maître de la Renaissance et le premier grand peintre du Siècle d’Or.
