Mass sexual harassment, a new Arab cultural practice?
The events in Germany, Sweden, Austria or Finland are linked to the “Taharrush Gamea”. It describes an Arab modus operandi as a group sexual harassment in crowds which can be compared to events in Cairo’s Tahrir Square (at the time of Egyptian revolution in 2011) as the journalist of CBS Lara Logan reported, victim of this new crimes against women. The meaning of the “Taharrush Gamea” is a “misogynous ideology in which women are punished for being in public”(2) . Since 2005, Egyptian women reported cases of being harassed during rallies and in 2010 the film Girls Cairo (Y. Nasr Allâh).reported also those crimes.
