DOHA - THE SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND

The Pullman Magazine - - Places & People To Love -

Proudly straddling tradition and modernity, all the Qatari capital was missing was a metro worthy of its ambitions. It will be a case of mission accomplished come 2019, as three major underground lines – red, green and gold – serving 37 stations right across Doha will finally be unveiled. This mammoth project is set to reinvent the city and revolutionize the Qatari population’s lives, shaving 10 minutes off a journey that would have previously taken 30 by car. The stations’ cutting-edge look was the brainchild of an international team of architects, who combined contemporary ideas with influences such as the Bedouin tent. The “vaulted” style inspired by Islamic art was chosen by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. What’s more, this project has strong green credentials: this new mode of transport is set to slash CO2 levels by no less than107 tons.
