Alpinisme, la saga des inventions

Vertical (English) - - Euronews - Gilles Modica, 256 pages. Alpinisme, la saga des inventions. Éditions du Mont-Blanc,

This magnificent book recounts the history and development of mountaineering equipment which today is so commonplace that we hardly stop to consider it.The road towards technological evolution has been a long one, and the equipment used by Heckmair on the north face of the Eiger in 1938 bore a closer resemblance to the gear of the pioneers than our own. Not only does this book chronicle significant advances in climbing material and techniques, it also recounts the very story of mountaineering: very few leaps in mountaineering were unaccompanied by some improvement in equipment, and Gilles Modica excels in marrying these two aspects. Complete with a lovely preface by Editor Catherine Destivelle, this is beautifully presented book from Éditions du Mont-Blanc.
