4000 des Alpes

Vertical (English) - - Euronews - Wolfgang Pusch and Helmut Dumler, 4000 des Alpes, photos byWilli Buckhardt, Ralf Gantzhorn and MarcoVolken. Éditions Glénat, 272 pages. Bergverlag Rother.

Wolfgang Pusch and Helmut Dumler have succeeded in creating the most complete volume covering the Alpine giants. Each 4000 metre peak has been awarded a well documented chapter, included a history of the routes and a selection of suggested itineraries (generally of a classic grade), complete with clear topos and some outstanding photos. However although this book is jam packed with information, it is not a guidebook; the book has not been formatted as such and the type of climbing it describes requires observational skills more than the referral to a precise topo. Instead, this book enables us to dream of this collection of summits, evoking memories of journeys through the Alps and the pleasure of summiting these mountains without worrying about performance, for the simple joy of being there.
