Chamonix et ses glaciers, les premières images
Subtitled Sous l’oeil des photographes, 1849-1869, this splendid book, published to celebrate the year 1865 and the golden age of alpinism, presents photographs from Rémi Fontaine's collection. Some of them were presented during exhibitions organised last summer in Chamonix. Beyond the glaciers, whose spectacular depth can be fully appreciated here, these photographs tell the story of the valley, the towns of which were but modest villages inhabited by a few farmers. Over the pages, a number of famous figures appear: photographers, alpinists, guides. This book is pure pleasure and is superbly designed.
