Thar she blows!
If, by chance, you are planning a holiday in Massachusetts, a visit to the island of Nantucket is highly recommended, offering anything from a charming weekend to a very relaxed week. There is a regular Cape Air flight from Boston that includes wonderful views of Cape Cod. You could also opt for the ferry from Hyannis, the small town where JFK had his summer residence.
Nantucket was the departure point of the Pequod in Moby Dick. Herman Melville was a sailor himself, and his famous novel was inspired by accounts of real events on a whaling trip. Whaling as an industry is long gone, but the island has retained its charm and is a favourite destination for wealthy Bostonians and New Yorkers. In addition to its long beaches and numerous boats anchored along the coast, the most surprising aspect is the level of conservation of the buildings and the visual harmony altogether. No garish colours, gaudy advertising, or noise…instead, a variety of local products in abundance and the feeling of belonging to a community, a very well managed tourist industry, and huge summer homes, empty most of the year…
Happy holidays and see you 7 September!
