Tunisia has abolished a 1973 law that banned women from marrying non-Muslims. President Beji Caid Essebsi’s spokeswoman made the announcement in September, congratulating women on gaining "the freedom to choose one’s spouse." Until now, a non-muslim man who wanted to marry a Tunisian woman had to convert to Islam. However, men were allowed to marry women of any faith. The discrimination was seen as violating Tunisia’s constitution which was adopted in 2014 in the wake of the Arab Spring revolution.
