Trudeau’s new rival?
Jagmeet Singh has become the first non-white politician to head a major political party in Canada. The 38 year-old lawyer from Toronto was elected on 1 October to lead the New Democratic Party (left). He beat three other candidates, winning 53.6 percent of the votes cast by party members. Singh is a son of Indian immigrants and a practising Sikh. He has built a reputation as a progressive force in Canadian politics, choosing "With Love and Courage" as his campaign slogan.
