Jag­meet Singh has be­come the first non-white politi­cian to head a ma­jor po­lit­i­cal party in Canada. The 38 year-old lawyer from Toronto was elected on 1 October to lead the New Demo­cratic Party (left). He beat three other can­di­dates, win­ning 53.6 per­cent of the votes cast by party mem­bers. Singh is a son of In­dian im­mi­grants and a prac­tis­ing Sikh. He has built a rep­u­ta­tion as a pro­gres­sive force in Cana­dian pol­i­tics, choos­ing "With Love and Courage" as his cam­paign slo­gan.
