A bitter taste
American coffeehouse chain Starbucks has opened its first branch in Italy. Located in Milan’s Piazza Cordusio, it is not the usual coffeeshop, but rather a huge “Roastery” – one of only three Starbucks Roasteries worldwide – where people can see the coffee roasting process and enjoy the Italian tradition of aperitivo, which consists of cocktails and light nibbles in the early evenings. More Starbucks coffee shops will open in Milan over the rest of the year. The new roastery is set to create 300 jobs but the city’s inhabitants were not thrilled about this opening. Italy has one of the world’s most developed coffee cultures and Italians have been resisting Starbucks for years, criticizing its alleged overpriced and poor quality coffee.
