WHAT IS THE NRA?

Founded in 1871, the National Rifle Association (NRA) claims to have 5 million members. These gun rights advocates form a very powerful political force, which lobbies against gun control and argues that more guns make the country safer. It strongly supports legislation expanding gun rights such as "open-carry" laws, which allow gun owners to carry their weapons, unconcealed, in most public places. After the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012, the NRA’s vice president Wayne LaPierre famously declared that “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” In the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre, Congress introduced bills to prohibit bump stocks devices but the NRA said it wouldn’t support an outright ban.
