On 5 September, an unsigned opinion piece, written by a senior official in the Trump administration, whose identity remains secret, was published in the New York Times. It portrays the American president as unstable and reveals that a “quiet resistance” within the administration has banded together to “frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations” to protect their country. Theories about who wrote the op-ed spread onto both social and mainstream media, while Vice President Mike Pence, as well as many other top officials, publicly denied writing it. Trump tweeted that the editorial was “gutless”. A few days later, journalist Bob Woodward released his new book, Fear: Trump in the White House, in which several former and current White House officials served as anonymous sources for the unflattering report.
