Ella Jones
The city of Fergusson, Missouri has elected its first African American mayor: councilwoman Ella Jones. In 2014, the city was one of the first to draw national attention to the Black Lives Matter movement, when its inhabitants protested against the police killing of Michael Brown, a black teenager. Barack Obama himself has commented on Jones’ victory, calling it “a reminder of the difference politics and voting can make in changing who has the power to make real change”. Politicians and journalists alike have called Jones’ election a turning point in the American political landscape. “We are the face of the future of America”, approved the new mayor, who also confessed receiving hundreds of messages of support from people across the country: “My election gives people hope. Everybody is looking for a change”.
