Under its vast glass canopy, the Grand Palais stages the largest retrospective ever in Paris of the brilliant Bill Viola, the American video artist whose immersive installations see bodies fall endlessly into the aquatic night or consumed by flames. His world beyond is the same amniotic whirlpool explored by Lynch in his films, or by the experimental blockbuster, Gravity. Five decades of hypnotic invention are visited in some twenty pieces, from The Reflecting Pool ( 1977 ) to The Dreamers ( 2013 ).
