Rock the casbah
For years, Tinariwen’s Tuareg blues has sent guitar riffs ricocheting through the sand dunes. The band, which hails from northern Mali, marries African music with rock in winding electric mantras that earned them a Grammy. This is the first time these descendants of nomads have recorded outside the Sahara, but true to their heritage, they chose the Joshua Tree desert in California for this latest album. With some of America’s own hot–shot musicians along for the ride, Tinariwen explores a deeper, more polished sound without straying from its origins or its originality.
