VOGUE Hommes International (English) - - AXEL THEMIN -

The Paris exhibition– event of the year, Anselm Kiefer at the Pompidou Centre traces 40 years of the work of one of the most highly respected masters of contemporary art. The show covers some 80 paintings, produced between 1960 and the present day, reflecting the torment of this “romantic”, born in the cellar of a bombed–out hospital in 1945. Kiefer has always sought to express, even expiate, the enduring errors of the German nation under Nazism. His early work caused a scandal in 1969, when he took photos of himself in German towns in Nazi uniform, performing the Nazi salute. He went on to produce a number of giant paintings made from mixed materials, creating tortured impasto works. The season will end with The Alchemy of the Book, an exhibition of the artist’s books, at the François Mitterrand Library ( BnF ) — a major body of work that has seldom been seen in France.
