KING OF CHIC

VOGUE Hommes International (English) - - VOGUEHOMMANIA - INTERVIEW BY Olivier LALANNE PHOTOGRAPH Marcello Junior DINO

“God is black”, the Umit Benan runway show was one of the highlights of the Spring / Summer 2019 season. A strong collection pared down to the essential skilfully melding the spirit of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Tupac Shakur, striped djellabas, trousers and a saharienne in linen, wild silk pyjamas, carbon or immaculate suits and tuxedo jackets … Impeccable.

VOGUE HOMMES

What is the spirit of Umit Benan’s style?

UMIT BENAN

I’d say it’s street sartorial. Where rules don’t exist. But you’ve got to have the right masculine attitude. I’d say in winter, it would be cotton workwear trousers or pyjama trousers with a silk shirt and a long wool or cashmere coat. However, in the summer, it would be a linen suit. A silk wife–beater shirt, with espadrilles.

VOGUE HOMMES

Why did you choose to launch a see now buy now collection?

UMIT BENAN

I decided to stop showing my collections to the press. I just wanted some time off from public opinion. In general. Apart from that, with see now buy now I can avoid being influenced by what the stores do or don’t buy. I design a collection and produce directly what I like. That’s what makes me happy. Not what others like and buy. That way I can remain true to

myself and more focused.

VOGUE HOMMES

What is “chic” for you?

UMIT BENAN

There are two complementary parts to chic in a man. One is based on character; the other is related to his clothes. The first is about attitude. On a man it’s mostly the attitude, manners and values. Basically, how he moves, the way he talks to women. His family values. The second is about style. A man has got to have a sense of texture and colour. Linen, silk and cashmere are chic layers. In short, being chic is being in total confidence

with yourself.
