On the Cut­ting Edge of Cou­ture

The glam­orous world of haute cou­ture as pho­tographed by Mark Shaw for Life, Harper’s Bazaar and Made­moi­selle is on show at the Ga­lerie MR14. The show sim­ply en­ti­tled Mark Shaw brings to­gether rare pic­tures of Parisian cou­ture in the 1950s and of­fers a be­hind the scenes look at houses like Dior, Ba­len­ci­aga and Bal­main, and among the 50 pho­to­graphs on dis­play is an im­age of Chris­tian Dior at work dur­ing a fit­ting ses­sion. Mark Shaw is best known for his pho­to­graphs of Jac­que­line and John F. Kennedy but he was first and fore­most a fash­ion and advertising pho­tog­ra­pher. He be­gan work­ing as a free­lance pho­tog­ra­pher for Life in 1952 and in his 16 years with the magazine he shot 27 cov­ers and more than 100 sto­ries, which in­cluded the magazine’s an­nual re­view of the Euro­pean fash­ion col­lec­tions. The show brings to­gether pho­to­graphs, a film and an au­then­tic re­con­sti­tu­tion of a cou­ture sa­lon.
