On the Cutting Edge of Couture
The glamorous world of haute couture as photographed by Mark Shaw for Life, Harper’s Bazaar and Mademoiselle is on show at the Galerie MR14. The show simply entitled Mark Shaw brings together rare pictures of Parisian couture in the 1950s and offers a behind the scenes look at houses like Dior, Balenciaga and Balmain, and among the 50 photographs on display is an image of Christian Dior at work during a fitting session. Mark Shaw is best known for his photographs of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy but he was first and foremost a fashion and advertising photographer. He began working as a freelance photographer for Life in 1952 and in his 16 years with the magazine he shot 27 covers and more than 100 stories, which included the magazine’s annual review of the European fashion collections. The show brings together photographs, a film and an authentic reconstitution of a couture salon.
