Re­mem­ber­ing Renoir

It is the Year of Renoir this sum­mer in Cham­pagne coun­try for Pierre-Au­guste Renoir spent over 30 sum­mers paint­ing in a house in the bu­colic vil­lage of Es­soyes in the Cham­pagne re­gion. Last June his home there was opened to the pub­lic of­fer­ing a glimpse into the life of this fa­mous artist. Nestled in the heart of the Côte des Bar in Aube, Es­soyes and its neigh­bour­ing ar­eas would pro­vide Renoir with myr­iad sub­jects for his paint­ings with two of his paint­ings ex­hib­ited in the home un­til Septem­ber 24th. In par­al­lel, the nearby city of Troyes is host­ing an ex­hi­bi­tion in its Musée d’Art Moderne de­voted to the works of Renoir. En­ti­tled Un Autre Renoir and run­ning through to Septem­ber 17th, it brings to­gether 50 works by this ma­jor painter of the 19th and 20th cen­turies from pres­ti­gious French pub­lic col­lec­tions. The show evokes the in­flu­ence of Es­soyes on his work.
