Where Paris - - Arts & Attractions -

The Grand Palais is hosting a major retrospective devoted to Irving Penn, who is regarded as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Featuring over 240 photographic prints, all produced by the artist himself, and a selection of graphic works, the show takes a look at 70 years of the American artist’s career. The full range of subjects tackled by the photographer are all represented ranging from fashion to the still life, portraits, nudes, street scenes and his iconic Small Trade series photographed at the beginning of the 1950s in Paris, London and New York. His works were marked by simplicity, minimalism and an astonishing rigour from the studio to the darkroom where Penn perfected his unique photographic prints. The show offers a chronological and thematic exploration of his work starting with street scenes from Philadelphia and New York moving onto Europe devastated by war into the portraits and fashion photography.
