The dream-like, highly original and simply beautiful shop windows created by Leïla Menchari for the house of Hermès are being honoured with an exhibition presented by Hermès entitled Hermès à tire-d’aile-Les Mondes de Leïla Menchari at the Grand Palais. “Draw for me your dreams,” requested Annie Beaumel, who was in charge of the store windows for Hermès back in 1961 when Leïla Menchari first came to Hermès. And draw dreams she did from 1978 to 2013 when she would imagine, draw and create the decors of the windows of the celebrated Parisian saddler. Travelling through a series of eight tableaux the visitor can discover the extraordinary and generous universe of Leïla Menchari created with the complicity of artists from all horizons ranging from painters, to sculptors to mosaic artists, stonecutters and more. “I always wanted for it to be authentic, sincere,” she says, “Sometimes I was surrealist, I loved that, but always with real things, things that people could recognise. It had to be at once unexpected, out of the ordinary, surprising, something that dialogued with the passers-by.”
