An in­trigu­ing and re­veal­ing ex­hi­bi­tion pre­sent­ing works that ex­plore the artis­tic vi­tal­ity of the In­done­sian is­land of Java is be­ing played out at the In­sti­tut des Cul­tures d’Is­lam in Paris. The col­lec­tive show, one of the most wide-rang­ing de­voted to con­tem­po­rary In­done­sian art in Paris, presents works that take a look at the com­plex­ity of a so­ci­ety that is caught in the midst of tra­di­tion and in­no­va­tion. En­ti­tled Java - Art En­ergy, the show fea­tures 13 artists who ex­plore themes as varied as bio­di­ver­sity, ur­ban­i­sa­tion, traces of colo­nial­ism and rad­i­cal Is­lam. From the megapo­lis of Jakarta to the misty moun­tains of Ban­dung by way of the city of art and cul­ture that is Yo­gyakarta these works, most of which have never been shown in Europe be­fore, demon­strate the cul­tural di­ver­sity of this is­land, which has ex­pe­ri­enced so many dif­fer­ent in­flu­ences. -P.V.
