The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris is hosting its first temporary exhibition this autumn with a refined and glamorous show bringing together some 50 haute couture creations by the designer, which were inspired by India, China and Japan. The show, entitled Yves Saint Laurent: Dreams of the Orient, features pieces emanating from the museum’s permanent collection juxtaposed with Asian objets d’art on loan from the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques - Guimet and private collections. The designer drew his inspiration mainly from books and objets d’art plunging into the heart of local customs and folklore to propose his own sublime vision of traditional clothing. Sumptuous coats inspired by India would punctuate his early collections while Imperial China would mark his 1977 Autumn-Winter Collection. The landmark perfume Opium released in 1977 would be the heady fragrance of all Asian influences and later Yves Saint Laurent, fascinated by Japan and in particular Kabuki theatre, would create his versions of the Japanese kimono. - P.V. Showing from October 2nd through to January 27th 5 ave Marceau (16th), 01 44 31 64 00
