Russia and gay activists – does that go together? If we consider our stereotypical, western notions, then probably not. And yet this photo proves the opposite. It was taken on May 1, 2014 in St Petersburg. LGBTI activists used the May Day holiday – traditionally used for large parades in Russia – to call attention to the dismal situation of gays and lesbians in their country and fight for their rights. Furthermore, the young people clearly showed what they think of the conflict in the Ukraine: “Love is stronger than war” was written across one huge banner.
