Airport tarmacs are usually strictly off limits – if not for safety reasons, then because of security regulations. But at Tempelhofer Park, Berlin’s massive airport-turned-park, you’re free to roam as you please throughout the enormous 3.5 square kilometers of tarmacs and open meadows that were closed off to outsiders until 2010. These days, sunny weather draws Berliners en masse to the expansive grounds, and they take advantage of its huge space for kite flying, rollerblading, cycling, barbecuing, or simply sun tanning. Whatever your hobby of choice, one thing always goes perfectly with a sunny day in the park: a picnic. Starting in the 2014 season, Picnic Berlin has launched a picnic basket catering service that provides every last detail for a perfect al fresco meal, from porcelain plates, wine glasses, and a blanket to sit on to playtime equipment like badminton rackets. Deluxe food and drink to fill the basket can be ordered in advance and picked up along with the basket at the park entrance off Oderstraße. www.picnic-berlin.com
