It’s In The Bag
Anyone who starts to pack over a week before departure simply deserves great luggage. Annabelle Mallia (who fits this profile) seeks out the best stores in Berlin for her next getaway.
Some people spend days carefully picking out the things they will take on their trip. Others would argue it doesn’t matter what’s inside the bag, as long as the bag itself looks good. If the latter rings true for you, then a visit to one of these Berlin stores shouldn’t be missed. Rimowa (KaDeWe, Tauentzienstr. 21-24, www.rimowa.com) is one of Europe’s leading luggage manufacturers. The long- established, family-run German company carries out most of the 200 steps required to produce a suitcase by hand. Their metal suitcases have a characteristic groove and structure, making them recognizable at first glance, particularly in the hands of celebs on their way to L. A. for their next movie shoot. Another must for the luxury traveler is Tumi (Kurfürstendamm 45, www.tumi.de). Renowned for their technical innovation, including an abrasion-proof nylon fabric, Tumi is perfect for the travel- obsessed. Tumi also stocks handbags, briefcases, electronics, and other executive accessories in a range of bold colors to suit your particular style. Located a little further down West Berlin’s luxurious shopping mile is Porsche Design (Kurfürstendamm 190, www.porsche- design. com), specializing in accessories for men. They carry a range of luggage for your next Milan business trip, as well as sunglasses, watches, electronic devices, and perfume. While Porsche became internationally famous for the sporty look and high speeds of their cars, the design label is honored for its technically-inspired look and purist design, like their all-black watch, still their most popular item. Liebeskind Berlin (Alexa Center, Grunerstr. 20, www.liebeskindberlin.com), on the other hand, is geared predominantly toward women. Whether for business, shopping, or clubbing on Mallorca, this unconventional, young designer bag label from the capital has something for every occasion. A range of looks is available, with favorites being metallic suede, 3D, and vintage. So next time you pack, do it in style.
