Do Museums Matter?
Challenging Western artistic values is the first of several planned collaborations between the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle (p. 47) and London’s Tate Modern, aimed at showcasing perspectives from outside Europe and America. The exhibition: The Museum of Contemporary African Art. The artist: Meschac Gaba, who splits his time between his birthplace of Cotonou, Benin and Rotterdam. Gaba’s work is immersive, self-reflexive, and fills several rooms, ultimately both offering rarely acknowledged African artists a place in the spotlight as well as questioning the accepted importance of that spotlight in the first place. Opens 20 September as part of Berlin Art Week.
