With so many tempt­ing Ger­man treats, you'll be hard pressed to stick with your diet over the fes­tive pe­riod. And what bet­ter way to break it than with Stollen? This sweet bread made with dried fruit, nuts, spices, and of­ten with a marzi­pan cen­ter, is then rolled in ic­ing sugar for the yum­mi­est re­sults. The Christ­mas Stollen tra­di­tion dates back to the 15th cen­tury, when Pope In­no­cent VIII al­lowed the use of but­ter dur­ing the fast­ing sea­son of Ad­vent. The city of Dres­den even has a Stol­len­fest to honor the sweet de­light.
