Where Berlin - - CONTENTS -

Michael Kudoll, concierge at the Sofitel Berlin Kurfürstendamm, knows how to enjoy family time and the great outdoors.

What does your perfect day in Berlin look like?

Sleeping in, reading the Berliner Morgenpost online with my cup of coffee, and going for a long walk around one of the the city lakes, like Schlachtensee or Krumme Lanke, followed by ice skating with the family at the Horst- Dohm-Stadium in Schmargendorf. In the afternoon, a visit to the zoo, then an early dinner and a film at our favorite theater, the Astor Film Lounge.

When you have visitors, what do you show them?

I usually get them a “Small Group“ticket, so they can use public transport free of stress. With that, we take the U3 to Wittenbergplatz to visit the gourmet food department at KaDeWe. Then we go for a stroll on Tauentzienstraße and visit the Bikini Berlin mall, which has a great observation deck overlooking the zoo’s monkey enclosure. After that, I like to take them to the Hauptbahnhof station and walk from there to the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Gendarmenmarkt, and Museum Island. When the weather is nice, the day ends in a beer garden by the water, either at the Fischerhütte on Schlachtensee or at Café am Neuen See.

Describe Berlin in three words

Sophisticated, easygoing, livable.

Tell us something about your hotel

Designed by German architect Jan Kleihues, the interior plays with lighting, alongside Bauhaus-inspired furniture in lovely warm colors. Throughout the hotel, you can discover striking artwork, like paintings by German artists Junior Toscanelli and Katrin Kampmann.

What events do you recommend in January?

The cold season is the time for visiting museums. I recommend a photography tour in the West, starting with the exhibition

Photography in the First World War at the Museum of Photography, followed by a visit to C/O Berlin in the former Amerika Haus, which currently presents the exhibition Magnum.Contact Sheets. Finally, the exhibition Love at the Camera Work art gallery.

Where is the coziest place in Berlin?

On a dark and cold winter evening, a candle-lit table near the pianist at restaurant Filou on Bleibtreustraße.
