Where East Meets West

Where Berlin - - DINING -

Berlin’s recent history has been made by its borders and divisions. One of central Berlin’s best coffee spots embraces this history head on, choosing to set up more or less smack dab where the Berlin Wall once split the city. Just a few doors down from Checkpoint Charlie, westberlin has become a favorite destination not just for tourists in need of a coffee hit after taking some snapshots at the famed checkpoint up the road. Locals prize the café’s great coffee as well as its atmosphere and selection of inspiring reading material. Owner Kai Bröer is an architect and his fine eye is evident in the café’s sleek and impeccable interior, modern and chic yet laidback and unassuming. On the shelves are not only local and international newspapers but also a well- curated selection of magazines and design books. Treats such as the famed New Yorkstyle cheesecake from Kreuzberg’s Five Elephant or cinnamon rolls from Mitte’s Zeit für Brot bakery round out the selection.
