Jamaican Me Hungry

Where Berlin - - DINING -

What better antidote to the gray, grim Berlin winter than a trip to the sunny Caribbean – even if it’s only a culinary one? Since 2009, RosaCaleta has been a neighborhood favorite in Kreuzberg, serving up a spicy Jamaican menu to Berliners with a craving for something exotic. That Jamaican classic, jerk seasoning, is a mainstay at RosaCaleta, the spicy, aromatic blend based on allspice berries and fiery Scotch bonnet peppers used to marinate everything from shrimp to tofu to chicken wings. The mixed jerk platter is a tasty start to the meal, or that other island favorite, beef patties made with flaky pastry. Meaty main dishes are paired with Jamaican side dish staples like dumplings or rice and peas, as well as European- influenced creations like sweet potato and ginger gnocchi. Because every Caribbean fantasy involves lying on a white sand beach with an umbrella- topped drink in hand, don’t pass over the selection of irresistible cocktails, either. How about some Jamaican white rum topped up with tamarind juice and fresh lime, or a rum punch swirled with tropical fruit? Muskauer Str. 9. T: 030. 69537859. www. rosacaleta. com
