Schloss Char­lot­ten­burg is one of the dis­trict’s great­est at­trac­tions. Built in the baroque style in the 17th cen­tury to house the Prus­sian royal fam­ily, the palace fea­tures a splen­did in­te­rior and a beau­ti­ful, sprawl­ing back gar­den that is free and open to the pub­lic.

Un­til next fall, Char­lot­ten­burg will con­tinue to be home to not one, but two opera houses: the Deutsche Oper and the Staat­soper, which has tem­po­rar­ily moved out west to the Schiller The­ater while its home the­ater on Mitte’s Un­ter den Lin­den un­der­goes ex­ten­sive ren­o­va­tion. Both host reg­u­lar bal­lets by the Ber­lin Staats­bal­lett; pro­duc­tions this month in­clude and the time­less


a cult Ger­man re­tailer for top- qual­ity, tra­di­tion­ally made home­wares, has its Ber­lin flag­ship in Char­lot­ten­burg at Har­den­bergstr. 4-5. Don’t miss its neigh­bor­ing brot&but­ter café and deli, which makes some of the best baguettes and crois­sants in the city.
