Rachel Stern rounds up the best locales to celebrate your inner Irish this Saint Patrick’s Day.
Knock back a pint of Guinness and stamp your feet to Gaelic tunes at this year's St Paddy's festivities.
Germans dub every evening after work as a
Feierabend (literally ‘celebration evening’). This is especially true on St. Patrick’s Day, when Irish-inspired festivities break out at pubs, bars, and even a film festival around Berlin. So on Friday, 17 March, dress up in your pinch-proof green attire and hit the town for live music, dancing, and of course a wee bit of Guinness.
Situated in a cozy corner of Charlottenburg, the charming Irish Harp (Giesebrechtstr. 15. www.harp-pub.de) has two full bars offering a wide selection of Irish and German drinks, including of course beers and ales. On St. Paddy’s Day, pubgoers can listen to melodious live music from its namesake instrument and, if the weather warms up, sip a pint on its terrace.
If you’re looking to down a bit of traditional Irish food with your beer, The Lir (Flensburger Str. 1, www.thelir.de) near Tiergarten has an extensive menu, including some unique items like the hearty Galway Seafood Stew. Its dimly lit but inviting atmosphere also makes for a fine locale to cozy up to a drink.
If you fancy celebrating a bit further east, head to the Happy Pigs Pub (Lenbachstr. 1, www. thehappypigs.de) in the heart of Friedrichshain. With festive green walls and a wide selection of beers and cocktails, the always happening hub is a lively locale to catch bands playing their favorite Irish melodies or to round up friends for a dart competition. For a different taste of Irish culture, visit the Sheeben Flick Irish Film Festival (www. shebeenflick.com), which will be taking place from 16-19 March at Berlin’s Moviemento Kino. The five-year-old festival features a curated program of Irish films that have not been distributed in Germany, as well as some Irish classics. Each feature film is paired up with a short and, as a special treat, the filmmakers and cast will answer audience questions after the film at the pop-up bar. You can wrap up the evening by stopping at the glowing green TV Tower at Alexanderplatz (tv-turm.de), festively lit up – courtesy of Berlin’s Irish embassy – throughout the whole weekend.
