Al­leged embezzler awaits trial

A 52-year-old for­mer tax of­fice em­ployee be­lieved to have em­bez­zled some 2 mil­lion eu­ros was re­manded in cus­tody yes­ter­day af­ter al­legedly ad­mit­ting to an in­ves­ti­gat­ing mag­is­trate that he had si­phoned of hun­dreds of thou­sands of eu­ros from his work­place over the past three years. In his tes­ti­mony, Nikos An­dri­opou­los al­legedly ad­mit­ted to us­ing bo­gus pay­ment or­ders to steal nearly 500,000 eu­ros from the tax of­fice in Kypseli, near cen­tral Athens, this year alone. The 52-year-old al­legedly ex­pressed re­morse and said he was pre­pared to re­turn his il­licit pro­ceeds.
