The Environment, Energy and Climate Change Ministry yesterday announced the beginning of the procedure for the island of Crete’s interconnection with Greece’s continental power grid. It follows the completion of a study which showed that this solution makes more sense financially compared with the development of new autonomous pow- er production plants on Crete. The interconnection will also allow the absorption by the national grid of greater quantities of electricity from renewable energy sources produced on Crete. The study proposed Attica and the area of Korakia, near Rethymno on Crete, as the best points for the interconnection.
