Greeks not linked to drugs

The 20-strong crew of the Greek-flagged tanker Maria L, in­clud­ing 12 Greek na­tion­als, are to be freed over the next few days, authorities in Puerto Jose, Venezuela, said yes­ter­day af­ter deem­ing that the sea­men did not bear re­spon­si­bil­ity for 355 pack­ages con­tain­ing 417.6 kilo­grams of drugs that were found at­tached to the bot­tom of its hull by divers in early March. The divers’ in­spec­tion was de­manded by the port’s authorities and con­ducted with the per­mis­sion of the ship owner af­ter the ship had loaded its cargo, an oil re­fin­ery byprod­uct be­ing trans­ported to Terneuzen in the Nether­lands and then Im­ming­ham in the United King­dom. It re­mained un­clear when the sea­men are to re­turn home.
