Ilia asks for Greek lawyer
Fugitive former judge Antonia Ilia had her request for bail turned down yesterday when she appeared in a London court after Greece requested her extradition. The judge said he was sure Ilia would abscond if he granted her bail but agreed to allow her time to study the prosecution’s documents. The court will also consider Ilia’s request to be represented by a lawyer from Greece rather than the one appointed by the English court. Ilia was found guilty last year of being part of a trial-fixing ring. In her absence, she was sentenced to almost seven years in prison. She was arrested in Brighton, south of London, last Thursday.
