Two bodies found on Preveza beach linked to smugglers’ boat
Authorities in the northwestern port of Preveza yesterday recovered the bodies of a 48-year-old Iranian migrant and an 8-year-old Afghan boy who had been passengers in a smuggling boat found washed up on a local beach. Another 22 would-be migrants – most believed to be of Afghan and Pakistani origin – were hospitalized for health checks. Authorities were seeking the Afghan boy’s twin brother and detained the migrants’ suspected smuggler, a 52-year-old Greek. It is thought that the 8-meter speedboat had set off from the Ionian island of Lefkada and had been heading for Italy.
